Micronutrient deficiency in PH: When the smallest matters most

More and more Filipino schoolchildren suffer from inadequate nutrition

Micronutrient deficiency in PH:
When the smallest matters most

By their very name, micronutrients are vitamins and minerals that are needed only in very small amounts, but their impact on our health is huge.

Micronutrients like iron, zinc, Vitamin A, and many others are responsible for the vital functioning of our body’s systems, from physical growth and vision, to brain vigor and increased immunity. When the body fails to receive the small quantities of micronutrients that it needs, serious health problems can result in a condition widely regarded as micronutrient deficiency or “hidden hunger”.

The nutritional makeup of the Philippines continues to be characterized by the severity of micronutrient deficiency. According to the Food and Nutrition Research Institute- Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST), 70-90 percent of Filipinos lack iron and Vitamin A in their usual diet.

Two out of ten schoolchildren suffer from iron deficiency anemia, and the incident rises with age. Following closely are those lacking adequate amounts of Vitamin A in their diet.  One out of ten from the same group is Vitamin A deficient.

The same study also shows that two out of ten children are zinc deficient. Zinc is a trace mineral that plays a role in body metabolism, reproductive health, immune function, and more than 200 important chemical reactions in the body.

Inadequate intake of these three important micronutrients may lead to several nutritional problems, including stunting, fatigue, poor concentration, lack of focus and other signs of impaired physical and cognitive development. These may be reflected among schoolchildren who suffer from poor mental and physical performance and frequent absenteeism as a result of impaired immunity. It is also important to have plenty of Vitamin C, which is a powerful antioxidant that boosts immunity, prevents cardiovascular disease, and contributes to healthy skin, among many other benefits.

“Making the right food choices is one of the ways to address the problems of micronutrient deficiency,” said Dr. Imelda Agdeppa, Assistant Scientist of FNRI-DOST. “Unfortunately, the inaccessibility of food and money in the majority of Filipino households puts many families at a high risk of getting sick. The good news is there are many products in the market that are affordable and fortified with these micronutrients, and many families are already benefiting from these.”

Experts from FNRI recommend that when there is an inadequate intake of these nutrients, the consumption of foods that are fortified particularly with the three micronutrients primarily lacking in the Filipino diet—Vitamin A, Iron, and Zinc—is  encouraged so as to address nutrient gap.

In response to this dietary concern, Nestlé Philippines is intensifying its campaign to promote nutritious and affordable sources of important nutrients especially needed by children, such as BEAR BRAND Powdered Milk Drink. It is fortified with tibay resistensya nutrients like Iron, Zinc, and Vitamin C plus Calcium that kids need for proper growth and to perform well in school.

Suaveng Ahit, Gwapong Schick Barangay Tour Launched
Looking and feeling good is not just about taking care of yourself; it’s about caring for the things around you and the world you live in. This is precisely what razor brand Schick strives to promote with its ongoing Suaveng Ahit, Gwapong Schick Barangay Tour.

As one of the most trusted personal grooming brands for both men and women, Schick goes all out in pushing its advocacy by reaching out to their valued patrons. Through this project, the brand hopes to continue its goal of imparting positivity and self-confidence not only on a personal level but on the community scale.

The tour got off in on a rousing start last December when the caravan rolled into Salamalabanan Subdivision in Imus, Cavite, where the group initiated different activities focused on engaging and educating the community on proper physical grooming, healthy and active lifestyle, and community awareness.

The project was well received and garnered positive feedback from the community—something that Schick hopes to replicate in other locations within the metro. “We could not have asked for a better start to this tour,” says Claire Guevara, Schick senior brand manager. “The Salamalabanan community here in Imus, Cavite was very gracious and receptive to what we were trying to accomplish as a brand. We greatly appreciate the effort and the participation put forth by the community and we hope that the same goes with our next destination.”

The tour will continue to visit designated locations throughout 2013, including communities around the area of Caloocan, Muntinlupa, Antipolo and Quezon City.
As part of the brand’s continuing mission to make people feel good both inside and out, the tour’s initiatives include activities such as giving free shaves and haircuts to residents, as well as conducting clean-up drives that help encourage community awareness of health and safety among the youth.

In the first leg the tour also hosted competitions that included a three-on-three basketball game, a free-throw and half-court shootout, as well as a dance showdown, all of which promoted good sportsmanship and camaraderie within the community. The winners and participants received cash prizes and gift packs from Schick.

The group stayed true to its promise of reaching out to the grassroots level. Together with celebrity host Regine Tolentino, the caravan visited tricycle terminals, groceries, and sari-sari stores and immersed themselves in the community while handing out free Schick products.

For more information on other tours, prizes, and promos, visit Schick’s website (www.schick.com.ph) or connect with the company via Facebook (facebook.com/schick.ph).

Fortinet Expands Network Security Solution Suite with New Dedicated Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Protection Products

Fortinet Expands Network Security Solution Suite with New Dedicated Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Protection Products

Family of High Performance Appliances Helps Today’s Enterprises to Defend Against DDoS attacks

Mandaluyong, Philippines – November 27, 2012 - Fortinet®, a world leader in high-performance network security, today introduced the FortiDDoS product family for enterprises, Web hosting and cloud service providers. The new FortiDDoS-100A, FortiDDoS-200A and FortiDDoS-300A are dedicated appliances that are designed to detect and help protect against today’s most damaging and sophisticated DDoS attacks. The appliances feature custom ASICs that are capable of mitigating DDoS attacks while maintaining incredibly-low latency (less than 26 microseconds), preventing loss of availability to critical systems, servers and applications.

“This launch is significant because as systems become more inter connected, the need for greater network protection against targeted DDoS attacks become more pronounced,” said Jeff Castillo, Fortinet's Country Manager for the Philippines.   “This specialized protection ensures customer confidence and decreases the liability of Philippine enterprises in the long term.”

Providing granular real-time network traffic visibility and automatic protection against targeted DDoS attacks, the FortiDDoS appliances will be the only solution on the market that supports network virtualization and automatic and continuous traffic baselining. Network virtualization helps prevent attacks on one segment of the network from affecting other segments, thereby preserving availability in virtualized environments of datacenters and cloud-based service providers. The automatic traffic baseline model building is also unique, enabling the FortiDDoS products to build a network behavior model initially and adaptively update it continuously with practically no end-user intervention, resulting in significantly reduced administrative overhead.

“DDoS attacks aren’t just an annoyance and minor inconvenience, they are a serious problem that could cause significant liability to businesses today,” said Michael Xie, chief technology officer and vice president of engineering at Fortinet. “The damage from a DDoS attack can include loss of revenue, loss of customer confidence, loss of brand equity and potentially huge legal liabilities. A FortiDDoS appliance installed in front of a network infrastructure can act as a shield against DDoS attacks.”

FortiDDoS appliances are easy to deploy and manage, and are designed to recognize today’s attack vectors and deliver hardware-accelerated performance to block attacks quickly.

“Fortinet appliances’ support of virtual instances is a valuable feature,” said Michael Suby, Stratecast vice president of research at Frost and Sullivan. “This feature is not only beneficial in supporting multiple layers of defense but also is a cost containment and administration-friendly feature for organizations that have multiple Web properties to protect, and need unique policies for each. Virtual instances can also be effectively used in defense escalation. Rather than have a single set of policies, multiple policy sets can be defined in advance, such that the organization can apply a more stringent set of policies if the preceding policies were inadequate.”

Hacktivism via botnets and network testing applications has increased significantly in the last year, which has led to an increase in volumetric and application layer attacks. These attacks bring down sites by filling up Internet pipes and overloading application servers. As businesses consume more software as a service (SaaS) offerings and other public cloud-based services, DDoS attacks have become a serious concern for CIOs and CSOs whether they are moving to the cloud or keeping their systems and data on-premise.

The most common motivations for DDoS attacks today are either financial or political. Financially motivated attackers seek to extort funds from sites by launching an initial attack and demanding payment to avoid future attacks. Politically motivated attackers launch an attack in response to an organization’s policies by disrupting the victim’s business operations. Regardless of the motive, any downtime affects not only a victim organization’s customers, partners and employees, but can damage its brand and credibility as well.

FortiDDoS Highlights
All FortiDDoS appliances feature eight virtualized network partitions with independent protection policies for virtualized environments, automatic traffic profiling and rate limiting context-aware policy enforcement for maximum effectiveness. They also provide real-time and historic attacking traffic analysis that delivers unmatched granular visibility on top attacks, top sources and top attackers. The FortiDDoS family will also utilize an innovative design that eliminates a common performance bottleneck by ensuring there is no CPU or operating system in the path of the packets.

• The FortiDDoS-100A features 1 Gbps full-duplex anti-DDoS throughput, four 1GbpsRJ-45 copper and SFP ports for LAN and WAN connectivity and one terabyte of storage. This model can be used to protect 2 Internet links.

• The FortiDDoS-200A features 2Gbps full-duplex anti-DDoS throughput, eight 1Gbps RJ-45 copper and SFP ports for LAN and WAN connectivity, a redundant power supply and two terabytes of RAID storage. This model can be used to protect up to 4 Internet links.

• The FortiDDoS-300A features 3Gbps full-duplex anti-DDoS throughput, twelve 1Gbps RJ-45 Copper and SFP ports for LAN and WAN connectivity, a redundant power supply and two terabytes of RAID storage. This model can be used to protect up to 6 Internet links.

Fortinet acquired technology powering these products through its asset purchase from Silicon Valley-based IntruGuard Devices, Inc., which occurred during Q1 2012. The terms of asset purchase are confidential and the amount paid by Fortinet as consideration for the assets is considered immaterial to Fortinet’s business.

Availability
The FortiDDoS-100A, FortiDDoS-200A and FortiDDoS-300A are scheduled for release immediately.
